[Casting News TBC] Naomi Watts to play Laura Bush in fictionalized biopic “American Wife”

April 18, 2014

It’s recently been confirmed that Naomi Watts is attached to star as Alice Lindgren, the fictionalized version of former first lady Laura Bush in a biopic based loosely on her life. The script is currently being penned by Ron Nyswaner and is based off the 2008 novel of the same name AMERICAN WIFE by Curtis Sittenfeld. All the character names and events have been slightly disguised, but the story follows a woman who marries the rambunctious son of a political dynasty, who eventually becomes president. The independent film is being produced by Red Crown and Marc Platt Productions, and is currently in search of a director.

This could be a huge chance for Naomi Watts to regain footing and even get a possible Oscar nod for portraying a member of one of the most controversial political families of the current era. Watts has been dancing between small indie films and box-office stumbles of late, and this is a great opportunity to get some positive attention.....

She did a couple small indie films in 2013, “Diana” (about the Princess Di’s last Pakistani lover) and “Sunlight Jr” an indie about struggling parents with minimum wage jobs. In 2012 she did “The Impossible” about the devastating Tsunami in Thailand, and in 2011 played the secretary Hellen Gandy in “J. Edgar” both of which received lukewarm reception in the US. I’d love to see her return to the glory days of “King Kong,” “The Ring (2),” and “Mulholland Dr.” which showed off that she wasn’t just a pretty face and could hold her own amidst different genres.

No news yet on when production is scheduled to start, but hopefully this political drama is fast on its way out of development. I can’t wait to see what they do with the thin veil of separation from the Bush family. Hopefully it will give the filmmakers enough freedom to actually make the points they want to make, and not worry too much about the political repercussions. After all, in the end they can say “Hey – this is a fictional character, George/Laura. It’s not even you!”

The film is being produced by Daniela Lundberg, Dan Crown, and Marc Platt. Riva Marker of Red Crown and Jared Leboff of Mark Platt Productions are Executives on the project.

I don't believe that. After the Diana failure I don't think she will make another biopic so soon. And specially taking into account that she left Queen of the desert. I've been searching in the net and the only web page that announces that doesn't look so reliable.

I too am skeptical about this, but let's see.

So many new projects are in line with her in the cast, like Blonde, The Birds, and now this. It's good that she is still one of most wanted leading actresses. But this one sounds not interesting, because the Bushes are definitely not likable people.

Wow, this is is interesting, if true.
